4 Steps to Overcoming Limiting Beliefs

“Limits exist only in the mind” ~ Author unknown

Imagine this… You are walking along a dirt road with the goal of getting to the other side of town.  Along your way, you run into a big brick wall.  This wall is completely blocking your path and it stops you dead in your tracks.

What do you do?  Do you give up and go home?  Do you just sit there and “hope” the wall will eventually disappear?  Do you push against it to try and move it with force?  Or do you overcome the obstacle by finding a way to get around it?

Our limiting beliefs are like big brick walls blocking us on our path to freedom, wealth, and success.  We all have them… It’s just a matter of learning how to work through them when they arise.  Most people, unfortunately, don’t know how to let go of their own illusions of limitation.  They end up “buying into” their limiting thoughts and beliefs and either just quit or struggle against them tirelessly to the point of exhaustion.

Successful people, on the other hand, have just learned how to walk around the big brick wall and continue along their path with even more enthusiasm, motivation, and empowerment than ever before.  Now, there are actually many ways of working through limiting beliefs… But at the end of the day, it really just comes down to your ability to see the TRUTH.

I recently learned a 4 step process to overcoming limiting (false) beliefs by a mentor and teacher of mine… And it’s been so transformational for me, that I couldn’t wait to share it with you!  Click play now on the video below to hear more…

I’d LOVE to hear from you!

Do the 4 step exercise that I explain in the video and then please share your insights with all of us by leaving a comment below! Do you have any questions, thoughts, feedback, or life experiences to share? And don’t forget to “share the love” if you enjoyed this post today by sharing it on Facebook and Twitter.  Thank you so much!  Hope this was valuable for you today!  I sure know how life changing it’s been for me!

Hi Katie

You truly are a being of light :)

I love what you do and the inspiration you offer to others. As for limiting beleifs, while they are a challenge to clear out and overcome, the rewards afterwards are immense. I guess a lot of it comes down to the social conditioning that we are bombarded with in the mainstream that encourage us to be comparitive by nature to acheive a sense of identity. But you’re right when we begin to go within, challenge the gremlins and discover our truths we begin to realise how magnificent we are as a species :) Thanks again for your post, Have an inspired say!

What if the opposite is true?

Michael November 16, 2010 at 10:44 am

Hi Katie,

What I meant was… it is so easy to convince yourself that you are great at xyz, and have enough value to be taken seriously, even accepted. I know from my own experience the difference between what people think of me, what I would like them to think of me and what they actually think of me.

I can understand how you overcame being shy, and kind of unsure of yourself when you first started out online. But you have business savvy, are very intelligent, and natural on camera/video. You are easy to accept, and believe in! And epitomise your message.

However, what if the opposite is true for others? The way you reacted to my blog post earlier this year clearly said that you were not convinced that I had enough value to share. I try to be the best marketer that I can be. It is not so much my limited beliefs, but people like Philip Kotler, et al that set such a high bar. I will try to overcome :)

A great 4 step strategy on overcoming our own limiting beliefs. I truly believe that limiting beliefs are a proliferation of our life’s experiences and that the key to overcoming them is learning to let them go, thus making room for more positivity in our being.

Thanks Katie for the 4 great questions. I have always liked the work of Katie Byron. As a spiritual life coach, I find that it’s amazing how attached people are to their beliefs. It’s good to examine beliefs the way you have presented. Of course changing those limiting beliefs isn’t that easy but realizing the cost helps. And it’s good to remember that shifting limiting beliefs is a process not a one time occurrence.

Powerful words Katie! It is amazing what we do when we decide to drop those beliefs and I’ve had to do this myself soooooo much lately! Often times when business is slow I think “well it must be because people don’t see any value in me.” But I know it’s because that’s the thought I’m giving myself. Thank you for another great video!

Hey Katie,

glad to see another post-video from you, that certainly was stuffed with lots of golden nuggets and real facts.

The best topic certainly is courage and how we can sustain it over the long term. We all have our barriers, we all have some issues with doing something new, but we have to do it, regardless of how we might feel at the moment.

It´s just a matter of time, and when you fight and encounter your fears than they are almost gone. The first step is really hard, and it takes a lot focus and willpower to work through it.

I found it very powerful to write down my fears, and see how I can overcome them.

Another big tip is: Write down all of your goals, and place the activities that you have to do next to them.
This will help you a lot to actually do it, because once you realized that this step is absolutely VITAL, you have to do it.

This process is so darn powerful and I can recommend it to everyone out there.

Katie, I know exactly where you have been, because I heard countless stories and was pretty impressed on what you achieved so far, and I´m proud of you.

I´ve got a very interesting question for you: Currently, I´m facing a huge challenge, it´s my first Webinar.

Which specific tip can you give me along the journey, to make it happen? Or better said, what can you do to strengthen your beliefs so it will seem a smaller obstacle than it actually is?

Looking forward hearing from you, and I´m so grateful for this blog-post.

Keep going.

Hi Katie!

Yes, I like your quote “…buying into” their limiting thoughts and beliefs…” The battle in the mind against doubt!

And yes, we need inspiration from each other sometimes. You do a great job at that!

and on the same note of inspiration, I want to share some inspiring words from Oscar Winner Kevin Spacy:

[The Question was given:]

How do we appreciate the first “Lean Years” we go through, leading up to the “Ultimate Prize” ?

[Kevin’s reply:]

“There IS no prize…out there.

The only prize is this one. [yourself]
And what you feel. And what you want to accomplish.

And if you can, as you start out, these…
what could be “Lean Years”, what could be “Fat Years”…

…I feel that I very often watch a lot of young people sort of meander around, without any idea about why they’re doing what they’re doing…

I mean, to want, and to be ambitious, and to want to be successful,

Is not enough.

That’s just desire.

To know what you want, to understand why you are doing it.
To dedicate every breath in your body, to achieve!

If you feel that you have something to give…
if you feel that you’re particular talent is worth developing…
is worth caring for…

…then there’s NOTHING you can’t achieve!

You’re going to grow up with your colleges.
You’re going to watch them have success and watch them have failure,
and you’re going to watch how they deal with it.

And they can be as much as a teacher for you, as anybody here…”

See his moving video on my blog post “Can You Succeed By Just Wanting It?”

P.S. Your webinar this evening was really great!

Limiting beliefs are just that; they limit your potential. I see it all the time when people sell themselves short and never even try. Successful people on the other hand use failure and learn from it and then push forward. It’s much better to go through life believing you can do anything and if you fail, you just roll with it.

I love this, Katie! With certain limiting beliefs, my bad habit has tended to be to “struggle against them tirelessly to the point of exhaustion” mostly because I had trouble figuring out HOW to overcome them. Just reading your post and watching your video made me realize even the language I was using (“I’m trying to break through…”) represented the struggle. *ugh* I can feel the shift from that alone, so thank you for that! :) I’m looking forward to using the 4 step process you outlined.

Chris & Michelle Chasen-Hooks November 26, 2010 at 6:10 pm

Hi Katie,

Great post with powerful insight!

Yes, our thought scan be “reframed!”

Many of the old beliefs are hard to discover because they were formed at a very young age. Some beliefs were taken from your family of origin and they no longer serve you, however they keep filtering your every experience in their own way because the are so hard to recognize & eliminate.

You should also understand that your every opinion and the way you see the world is so because of your beliefs. If you don’t like something, it means you have some kind of limiting belief about that thing.

The truth is, with a little practice, limiting beliefs will dissolve! With time & patience you can “reframe” every single thought in your thinking. You will have the absolute freedom to choose the way you want to think and live. You can choose your own beliefs and ways to behave.

Just keep reaffirming the “opposite beliefs” and look for their manifestations.

Successful people know that obstacles are apart of their lives to make them grow. They look at those challenges for opportunities to build their belief that their desire/goal is achievable. The 4 questions that you presented are so crucial to creating new beliefs about yourself. We are all brought up with certain beliefs because our surroundings(i.e. family members, friends, etc.) were not aware to give us anything else. So later on in life we must become aware of these beliefs by asking the questions you presented. The first question is the key to unlocking your beliefs, “Is this true?” Is it true anymore for me? Is it true for me to hold onto this belief and will it bring me to where I want to go in the future?

Thanks for your insights.

Daniel December 26, 2010 at 11:35 am

Here is phrase that summarize the whole post: “Limits exist only in the mind”. I have tested that for many years that the mind is our most powerful ally and our worst enemy at the same time.

This might be a little weird but I had an amazing experience from someone who taught me that everything is possible. I met this girl when I going to work. At first, she seems to be a pretty normal person but while I was getting closer to her, she confesed me she was capable of moving objects by only looking at them.

I could not believe what she told me. In that moment, my mind said THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE. I told here to stop goofing around with me, so in that moment she put a pencil over a table and looked a it very intensely. Suddenly the pencil start moving and changed its position to vertical. I could not believe what I was seeing, that was simply amazing. It took me time to recover myself from the amazement.

Later she explained to me that it is the mind who prevents us to use or full potential. The constant thought : “THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE” “I CAN’T DO IT” is what kept us prisoners and do not let us do anything else.

It really happened to me! IF you ask, I really start trying moving objects but I really have other objectives such as growing economically. Give time to each thing.

Limiting beliefs destroy dreams. I think you can get a lot of people to believe in themselves but once they think about the huge task of launching a successful business they can’t handle it and revert back to more limiting beliefs.

What a huge issue we all face today in business. Especially home based businesses.

Alain July 21, 2011 at 3:31 pm

I learned yesterday how limiting beliefs can keep a lot of good things away from you. The context I was reading it in was about money… and that many people have 3 main limiting beliefs that keep them from attracting money into their lives. Here they are(and this is from Dr. Joe Vitale from the secret in his free book called Attract Money Now – highly recommended):
1. I don’t love myself
2. I don’t deserve it
3. Money is the root of all evil.

So, when I learned this, I immediately wanted to learn how to release these limiting beliefs from my conscious and unconscious mind. That’s how I found this video. I tried the exercise you suggested and I do believe that my grip on these limiting beliefs has loosened a little bit. I’ll have to keep working at ridding myself of these limiting beliefs however.

Thank you so much for sharing this information with us! I retweeted this post with my followers.
