The Importance Of Adding Google FriendConnect To Your Blog (And How To Do It)

August 28, 2009

Google Friend Connect is a gadget that you can add to your blog or website that instantly gives you the ability to grow a thriving, interactive community that will:

  • Encourage community interaction and engagement
  • Attract more followers
  • Add the crucial element of ‘social proof’ to your blog
  • Get you free traffic to your site when members network with others in Friendconnect who have not yet visited your blog

I’ve prepared a video for you down below where I walk you through the process of installing Google Friendconnect on your blog:

Let me know what you think by leaving me a comment down below!  And ‘tweet’ it if you like it!  😉

Katie, Excellent, excellent explanation of how to add Google Friend Connect. This took me so long to figure out, and with a lot of help from the Community, and a lot of hunt and peck luck of where to add the codes in, I got it on my Blog. I have a lot of people asking me and I can’t really help because I don’t remember where I put the stuff. Now I know, and will refer folks to your wonderfully done tutorial.

And, while we’re talking about Google Friend Connect, I’d like to extend an invitation to you also to join my friend connect. You can do so by going to

Thanks Katie for your continued great advice and education!

Dear Katie,

Would you consider in helping me evolve and take me under your wing personally??? I need my feet in the door.

I need a miracle! Iam stressed out and I was arrested yesterday for the second time in my life due to a ex friend’s bullshit.

Talking with you Katie would be beneficial in a number of ways. Besides your gorgeous (: Please contact me at home (410)263-4897 est. I live in Annapolis,Maryland.

I am home right now. Make this a priority please. This is my life we are talking about. I am trying my best to focus on building a business online but this incident could alter my life for a long time. Please consider my request and get in touch with me. I pray that you will call me…. Thanks

Kind regards, Christopher

Hey Katie,
This is a really great post. I know that the Google Connect widget that I added to my blog has increased the sense of community on it a hundred fold. It is a great tool to raise your Social Media profile and a great way to develop some pretty fantastic friendships to boot.

Michael Cloke August 28, 2009 at 3:17 pm

Hey Katie –

So what is the deal here?

If I join you’re site and you DO NOT join my site, DO I UNJOIN you’re site? Like twitter followers or UNFOLLOWERS!

I think that we should all “in this community” join each other’s blog’s. Why not?

What do you think the basic rules about recipocracy are about Google Friend Connect?

Many Thanks…

Craig Bond August 28, 2009 at 7:05 pm

Hi Michael,

I agree with your comment in that we’ve gotten to the point where following others has become redundant, except in the fact that it’s only about numbers.

Why would anyone want to follow someone else’s blog or Twitter account when they really have no interest in what they have to say? Should Michael Jordan, for instance, start following all of his followers on Twitter?

People follow others because they are interested in what they have to say. Reciprocity in this case is meaningless.

Michael Cloke August 30, 2009 at 6:25 am

Hi Craig –

The Twitter People’s Champ is when you have a good balance ratio of Followers and Following. Most famous example of this scenario is Guy kawasaki; Managing Director of Garage Technology Ventures. Guy exemplifies fantastic Twitter Balance and Recriprocation. His ratio is almost a dead even 50/50 ratio with room to spare of not following Spammers. This status shows Follow-back love and openness to interaction.

Please visit:
The 4 Stages Of The Twitter SeeSaw

I have come across other communities that join each others blogs and they reap the rewards of social networking.

GFC Reciprocity is Very Important to me!

Great post! Very timely as well. I came across your blog only about a week ago. I am enjoying the content.

Great video again Katie. I like the concept of social proof and encouraging interaction on one’s blog, but personally I don’t like having all kinds of widgets flashing in my sidebar. Looking at the one here on Katie’s blog, it seems that friend connect widget is kinda neutral, so I’ll be looking if it’d work on my blog as well.

Andi Putra August 30, 2009 at 8:08 pm

Thanks for the article. I immediately setup Google Friend Connect on my blog and urged my brother to get it setup on

I think this might become a very effect social media marketing tool in the near future. I have been consuming all of this stuff (twitter, facebook, google friend connect, etc..) for the past couple of months. I will soon become very effective at online marketing as well as good ol’ fashion face to face marketing.

Thanks again. Love the site and content.

WOW, so so so confusing!! I can’t even get half way thru this one.. The FTP File Zilla has a port space, which I have no idea what to put here and nothing seems to work… I went to Smart FTP, but that did not work either… I’ll have to wait until my computer guru brother comes home to help me.. :(

That was a great presentation. Thanks so much for sharing. Please forgive my silly question, I’m just getting started in the social media world … I have to ask how many friend sites do we really need??? If we’re already connected with others on FB, Linked In, Twitter and others, do we really more?? Could you please explain the value of this? Thanks. Karen

Hi Katie,

another wonderful Video full of info. You sure made it look ez. I’m finally setting up a REAL WP.ORG Blog and really wanted to add this widget but just can’t seem to get it to work. I’m using FileZilla and seems as if everything is ok, yet GFC says no go. I see a couple others above have had ‘issues’ with this as well. I’d appreciate any light you could shed on what could possibly be wrong or if any others could relay how they got past this hurdle, love to hear how you did it.

Keep the great content coming, we ALL appreciate it.

Thanks, Bryan
