Wow, this is awesome advice. Have been pondering why it can take me all day on Saturday to do a few mundane tasks.

I’m going to set my phone alarm. Tomorrow will be soooo productive. Thanks!

Yes, I have heard of this but have not tried it. So I had forgotten that this is truly possible. So I will be trying to get all the task that need done in the time I have allotted and also have a contest with others to see how fast and how much I can accomplish in the shortest amount of time. Thanks Katie

Heh Katie,
This is great and so true, I know when I have organised myself and set time frames I get so much more done. I think I need to be setting the tasks to be done in lesser time so thanks for giving that to me to think about! Amazing how something so simple can optimise how one operates.
Have a great day!

Hey Katie!

This is the first I’ve heard of Parkinsons law.
It makes so much sense though! I definitely
agree that tasks take as much time as you allow
them to get completed.

Internet business owners all need to put this strategy
into practice because it’s so easy for us to get
distracted with the web at our fingertips all day.

I can’t wait to more consciously implement this strategy
into my business! Thanks again for another fantastic tip!

Hi Katie. I had heard of this before but never knew it had a name “Parkinson Law”. More importantly, it was a timely reminder that I need to get more done in my day and this is a great little tool and way of thinking. Thanks for sharing this idea. I was just in the process of creating a new blog post, so this helps me get my task done much more quickly.
Thanks

It’s always helpful to name and identify nebulous disorders. I always aligned this one with the law of gases ‘expanding to occupy the space availble’. Giving it an external reference is almost like a diagnosis. Now it’s become a bit more tangible, so take two doses of this formal treatment and it should bugger off. Whew, feeling better already. Now I just need to get over the compulsion to make blog replies. (Not really… this is my first one ever.) Well done Katie, you’ve been doing some nice work. I’ll keep watching with interest.

I’ve not heard of this law before, but I definitely notice that I work much harder as I get towards the deadline I’ve given myself. So, it makes a lot of sense to me to just move up the deadline!

I have never hear of Parkinsons Law until today, however, I have found this law to be true. Many years ago I worked as a graphic designer (I’m now a photographer), all jobs that came in had a deadline, more often than not new jobs would be squeezed in shortening the time frame for each job, every deadline was still met. Proving you can get more done in the same amount of time, just focus. As they say ‘if you want something doning, give it to a busy person.

LOL. I always find it amazing how I’m able to finish a project just before its deadline! It usually goes something like this:

“Wow, I had 2 weeks to get that done, and that’s exactly how long it took me. How does it always work out that way?”

Your tip is an excellent one that I will definitely adhere to!

Thank you.

My first boss many years ago had a thing about Parkinson’s law and was always setting us (sometimes unrealistically) tight deadlines in order to avoid it. Oddly enough I only ever thought about it in terms of time frames imposed by others (bosses, clients etc) but now I think about it I realise I do apply it in my own freelance work by setting myself tight blocks of time to do each project. Just never thought of this practice as being me implementing Parkinson’s law. Maybe my boss had more of an influence on my working practices than I realised!

Katie,

This is a fabulous tip. I love it. I’m starting now giving myself shorter time frames to complete tasks. When I think about it I have always gotten the most done just before leaving on a vacation. Because you have so much to get done prior to leaving for a trip, there is no question that you have to get them done in a short time frame.

I am going to see each of the tasks of my business as preparing myself for leaving on vacation. What a great motivator and putting the shorter time frames in place.

You are the best. Thank you for your heart and your commitment to helping others.

It’s all about focus, Katie. When you walk into your day and not have a goal, a motivation and a set time for each part you want to achieve, it is like taking a light bulb, which can be good for some purposes, but not to pinpoint what you want to have done at the end.

Taking the focus you achieve through what you described and really good goal setting plus knowing the motivation behind it, will make whatever you wish happen and function like a laser.

I think it was very good you made it a point to remind everybody of this.

Hey Katie. What a wonderful post. I actually use a strategy like this in my business but i never heard of it as “parkinson’s law.” I learned this similar strategy from other entrepreneurs and the name they came up with is ” eat the ugliest frog of the day.”

The way this works is you must write a list of 10 things that you want to complete before 10am starting with the things you normally would put off until last…..maybe because the task is complicated or you just don’t enjoy it….those things would be considered the ugly frogs. Lol

The rules to this strategy: cell-phones off, no checking emails or voice mails……or anything else that would prevent you from completing your list before 10am.

By applying this in my life…..i have been more productive which has allowed me so much more free time than i know what to do with…..and enjoy the things that i love most. i will be sure to pass your post along to my other friends!

Thanks,

Antoine Grant

Katie,

Great subject! I think this can be especially applicable for individuals starting out in this field.

I am familiar with “Parkinson’s Law” and in my experience it does tend to be true, particularly when individuals are a bit apprehensive about the task/project at hand. I have found in these circumstances the best thing you can do is set a specific time-frame, give it everything you have, and when the time-frame has been met, go with what you’ve got and move on.

If I can add a bit tour great post, I would also encourage people to use the same approach with individuals/businesses who may be working on a project with or for them. For example, if someone is working on a Wordpress theme, give them a specific time-frame for the project and check-in along the way. This will keep them on task and, more often than not, get your project done in a timely manner.

Thanks for the great post!

G’Day Katie

for some unknown reason I checked my gmail spam folder ( a rare feat) & found a email from you regarding this post. God only knows why it was put there as heaps of emails that get thru to my inbox should not & this surely should have! It provided real value.
It reminded me of the basics of simpleology a course by Mark Joyner (google it readers, worth a look it’s free) that ‘simply’ suggests you focus on your goals until it is completed. I have often found the more you need to do, the more you can especailly when there is a time limit

Katie,
Great vid. In the Book ” The Magic of Thinking Big” One of the failure diseases is Procrastination! I was always one the guys finishing a project at 2 or 3 in the morning the day before it was due. You are exactly correct. If we give ourselves a long time or a way out deadline, then we tend to put it off.
I still struggle with this, but am working on getting better and not veer off my course of action.
The Best way to get things done are to make a list and do it in short time frames to stay focused.

Thanks for the advice.
